Etymology

[edit]

Bascuas 2005:55.4 proposes from PIE *tugia, 'wet spot'. Maybe related to the placename Toiverde, in As Pontes de García Rodríguez. Joseph Piel (apud Bascuas) defends from Medieval Latin Teodeberti, genitive of Teodebertus, from a Suevic and/or Gothic personal name, from *Þeudōberhtaz, from Proto-Germanic *þeudō (nation) and *berhtaz (bright).
