Definite form; from Old Norse Þriðn f, an n-derivation of *þrið f (“unit of three”), related to þriði (“third”) and þrír (“three”). The name likely refers to three mountain peaks on the largest island. Cognate with Icelandic Þriðn, Þriðna.
