From Latin tragoedia, from Ancient Greek τραγῳδία (tragōidía, epic play, tragedy), from τράγος (trágos, male goat) + ᾠδή (ōidḗ, song), a reference to the goat-satyrs of the theatrical plays of the Dorians.
