Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Ultimateria (talk) 17:26, 3 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi and thank you for updating Azerbaijani templates! Since I see that you are a person with right technical skills, can you take a look on this as well? Allahverdi Verdizade (talk) 13:23, 26 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello Allahverdi, I've added the gerunds you requested to the conjugation template. I might be able to simplify this template as well. Orkhonien (talk) 14:09, 26 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much. If you are going to simplify it, have a look on the category "non-subject participle with undefined agent". As far as I can see, this category shouldn't even be there; a subject participle cannot lack a defined agent in Azerbaijani (other than with -miş). Great job so far. I see you've been active on french Wiktionary, adding Azerbaijani there. Join here if you fancy. https://discordapp.com/invite/G88uz3y Allahverdi Verdizade (talk) 22:34, 26 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Morphemes

[edit]

Hi! A few things.

1. Infixes are "affixes inserted inside a word stem". Thus, there are no infixes in Azerbaijani. -ləş is a derivational suffix. Some of the infixes you created already had entries, see https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/-dir#Azerbaijani and https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/-l%C9%99#Azerbaijani.

2. In morphology, we choose one phonological allomorph to represent all the others. Usually, according to a practise that was established for Turkish and which I followed for Azerbaijani, the representative allophone is one with the front vowel or consonant. That is, all terms coined by -laş/-ləş should have -ləş (although render as -laş if necessary by {{suf|ləş|term|alt1=laş}}). Series of suffixes with two allomorphs have "ə", series with 4 have "i", -çi, çü -çu and -çı are all represented by -çi. The same is true for allomorphs involving velar consonants. -kVn, -qVn, -ğVn and -gVn should all be represented by one allomorph. This is important for categorization: one should be able to find all existing terms containing a certain morpheme under the same category.

3. Obviously, all verbs are suffixed with -maq/-mək. Therefore, I think we should restrict the phrasing "from X -maq" to verbs derived from non-verbal bases, for instance, düzmək. In other words, an azerbaijani verb which lacks any suffixes other than -mək/maq is typically inherited from Proto/Common-Turkic verb or (rarely) derived from a non-verbal base, such as dolmaq or düzmək. Hello Allahverdi. Thanks for your feedback. It is interesting because I did the exact reverse on the French Wiktionary until someone told me they should be treated as infixes. I am unfortunately not a specialist on these issues. I'll take care of it nonetheless. Orkhonien (talk) 08:30, 2 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Your technical skills and work with updating the templates is much appreciated and needed. Allahverdi Verdizade (talk) 09:27, 2 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

IPA module

[edit]

Hi there, would you be interested in constructing an IPA-module for Azerbaijani? I have some work in progress here, have a look: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/User:Allahverdi_Verdizade/az-ipa I think you are the right man for the job. Allahverdi Verdizade (talk) 14:56, 11 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello Allahverdi, I just tried to create a module and template by following the examples of {{fr-IPA}} and {{ru-IPA}}, but it didn't work. Maybe I could think some more about how to proceed and give it another try. Orkhonien (talk) 16:25, 12 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
