Etymology

[edit]

From X +‎ videos, because the website hosts videos of pornographic content. X is probably a shortening of XXX (designating extreme or hardcore pornography); compare X-rated (pornographic or indecent) and the pornographic website xHamster. Coined in 2007 by Stephane Michael Pacaud.

Proper noun

  1. (Internet, trademark) A pornographic video-sharing website, among the most visited in the world.
    • 2012, Natalie J. Purcell, Violence and the Pornographic Imaginary, Routledge, →ISBN, page 109:
Fans can also use free websites that allow users to upload and share content (e.g., PornHub, Xvideos,[sic] YouPorn, PornoTube). Porn consumers no longer need to set aside an evening to watch a rented or purchased movie; they don't need to schedule or plan their time with pornography.
    • 2016, Philip Zimbardo, Nikita D. Coulombe, Man Disconnected: How the Digital Age is Changing Young Men Forever, Rider Books, page 105:
In the UK, 22 out of the top 500 most visited websites are porn sites. To put this in context, nearly 47 of the top 500 sites are different countries' Google homepages. Now consider that the most popular porn sites, LiveJasmin and XVideos, had more traffic than 36 of them, including Google Canada, Mexico, Australia and Germany.
    • 2021 April 16, Nicholas Kristof, “Opinion: Why Do We Let Corporations Profit From Rape Videos?”, in The New York Times[1]:
A clip, along with her full name, ended up on XVideos, the world’s most-visited pornography site. Google searches helped direct people to this illegal footage of child sexual abuse.
