From Proto Semai *ʔɑbeeʔ, from Proto-Aslian [Term?], from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ʔbaaʔ (father). Cognate with Khmer បា (baa), Bahnar , Khasi pa, Danau pɑ⁴, Old Mon 'ba', whence Mon .
