From a Vulgar Latin root *abellona, from Latin abellāna, from a city in Italy known as Abella or Avella. Compare Aromanian alunã, Occitan aulana, Portuguese avelã, Spanish avellana.

The standard meaning of this word is the hazelnut. (The tree itself is called fundici.) In some contexts it may refer to a peanut, as a shortening of alună de pământ or alună americană, also known as arahidă.
