Etymology

From an Algonquian language term for "something to sit on". Compare Cree ᐊᐢᐹᐏᑲᓀᐦᐃᑲᐣ (aspaawikanehikan, “saddle blanket”) and Ojibwe apishimon/apishamon (“something to lie down upon”).[1][2]
