Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Vulgar Latin *eccum tantum, from Latin eccum + tantum. (The initial syllable of *eccum- compounds regularly turns to /a-/ in Romanian.) Closely parallel to Italian cotanto and Old Catalan aitant. Compare also Old French itant, Old Spanish atanto (as well as French tant, Italian tanto, Spanish tanto). For a clearer view of the phonetic evolution of the Romanian word, compare the Aromanian equivalent and its variants, which maintain clearer vestiges of their etymological origin: Aromanian ahtãntu / ahãt / ahãntu.[1]
