Borrowed from East Slavic, from Old East Slavic хомѣкъ (xoměkŭ), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kāmjas (compare Latvian kāmis (hamster), Lithuanian kãmas (rat)).[1] See further at Proto-Slavic *xoměstorъ.
