Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Ancient Greek κοκκύμηλον (kokkúmēlon), from κόκκῠξ (kókkux, “cuckoo”) + μῆλον (mêlon, “apple, any fruit from a tree”). The ending in -i could be a consequence of contamination with meli (“honey”).
