French

Etymology

[edit]

From en- +‎ grange +‎ -er.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ɑ̃.ɡʁɑ̃.ʒe/
  • Audio:(file)

Verb

[edit]

engranger

  1. to store
  2. to rake in
  3. to collect, gather in
  4. to gain (experience, points)
  5. to generate (economics; profits)

Conjugation

[edit]

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written engrange- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling-change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
