Etymology[edit]

From ergon (work) +‎ -al (pertaining to), in analogy to thermal (pertaining to heat), coined by John Tyndall as "thermal and ergonal content" (1867, p. 357) in the translation of Rudolf Clausius' phrase Wärme- und Werkinhalt (1865).
