[edit]From Middle Welsh ewyllys, from Proto-Celtic *awi- (“desire”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ew- (“to enjoy/to consume”). Cognate with Breton youl, Cornish awell (“will, craving”), Sanskrit अवति (avati, “he consumes, satisfies”) and Latin aveo (“I desire, crave”).
