Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old Polish gżegżółka, ultimately derived from Proto-Slavic *žegъzuľa with the expected consonantism ż...gz deformed into a reduplicative shape. Cognate with Lithuanian gegužė̃, Latvian dzeguze, Old Prussian geguse, Old East Slavic жегъзулꙗ (žegŭzulja).
