From Proto-Germanic *gasinþô, equivalent to ġe- + sīþ. Cognate with Old Saxon gisīth, Old High German gisindo (German Gesinde), Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍃𐌹𐌽𐌸𐌰 (gasinþa), 𐌲𐌰𐍃𐌹𐌽𐌸𐌾𐌰 (gasinþja).
