- Possibly from dialectal Krotte (“toad”) + -n-. Compare hunde-, from Hund (“dog”).
- Alternatively from Grotte (“grotto”) + -n-. Compare Italian grottesco (“grotesque”), from grotta (“cave, grotto”).
