From Old Swedish härold, from Old French herault (modern French héraut), from Frankish *heriwald, from Proto-Germanic *harjawaldaz (see Harald and Proto-Germanic *Harjawaldaz), a compound consisting of Proto-Indo-European *ker- (army) + *h₂welh₁- (to be strong).
