From Proto-Iranian *hajáhram, from Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-ǵʰéslom, from *ǵʰéslom. The source is probably a Scythian language; compare Ossetian ӕрзӕ (ærzæ, with metathesis). Compare further Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬰𐬀𐬢𐬭𐬀 (hazaŋra), Persian هزار (hezâr). See also sada (“hundred”).
