From Proto-Finnic *hiiri, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *šiŋere. Cognates include Finnish hiiri, Erzya чеерь (čejeŕ), Northern Mansi таӈкер (taňker), Hungarian egér.
The computing sense is a semantic loan from English mouse.
