Prepositional phrase

[edit]

in one

  1. In a single attempt.
He asked me to guess his middle name, and I got it in one.
  2. (theater) Performed downstage between the frontmost pieces of scenery.

Usage notes

[edit]
  • (theatre): Correspondingly, a performance between the next pieces of scenery (slightly further back) is in two, and one yet further back in three, which sometimes denotes the entire stage area; a deeper stage might also allow for in four and so on.
