Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish كانون اول (kanun-ı evvel), from Arabic كَانُون الأَوَّل (kānūn al-ʔawwal); equivalent to kânun +‎ evvel (first). The name was officially changed to Aralık by law number 4696 passed January 10, 1945.
