From Middle High German küelen, from Old High German kuolōn, chuolen, from Proto-Germanic *kōlōną, *kōlēną, related to *kalaną (to be cold). Equivalent to kühl +‎ -en.

Cognate with Hunsrik kiele, Luxembourgish killen, Dutch koelen, Saterland Frisian köile, English cool (verb), Swedish kyla.
