Borrowed from Javanese ꦏꦧꦸꦥꦠꦺꦤ꧀ (kabupatén), equivalent to bupati + ke- -an. Doublet of kebupatian.

Usage notes[edit]
Kabupaten is used for former Dutch East Indies administrative division in Java of Dutch regentschap, which was renamed into Japanese 縣, 県 (ken) during Japanese occupation.
