From Middle Breton cunff, from Old Breton cum, from Proto-Brythonic *kʉβ̃, from Proto-Celtic *koimos (“dear, nice”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱóymos (“of the home, belonging to the family”). Compare with Welsh cu (“dear, beloved”).
