Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *lémešis. From the same stem as the verb lemt (“to decide, to resolve”) in its old meaning, “to break.” Cognates include Lithuanian lẽmežis (“plowshare; part of the plow where the plowshare fits”), Russian ле́мех (lémex, “plowshare”), Czech lemes, Polish lemiesz.[1]
