Noun

lever frame (plural lever frames)

  1. (rail transport) A frame in a signal box in which levers that operate signals and points are mounted.
    • 1962 October, “Talking of Trains: The L.M.R. electrification”, in Modern Railways, page 220:
All layout remodelling and resignalling at Stafford has already been finished; the colour-light signals, with their route-indicators, and the power-operated points are operated from the lever frames of existing signalboxes.

Usage notes

[edit]

Signal boxes and their lever frames are gradually being phased out, a process that has taken many years. Lever frames will probably still be found on heritage railways however.
