From Proto-Cushitic *maaħ- (to get wet) from Proto-Afroasiatic *maʔ-. Compare Aasax maʔa, Dahalo maʔa; also Egyptian mw, Hebrew מים (máyim), Classical Syriac ܡܝܐ (mayyā) and Somali maanyo.
