Presumably from Proto-Eastern Algonquian *mōšəkīnkw (rabbit, hare). Perhaps related to Abenaki matguas (rabbit), Penobscot máhtəkʷehso (snowshoe hare, rabbit), Malecite-Passamaquoddy mahtoqehs (rabbit), Mohegan-Pequot tuksáhs (rabbit).
