Etymology[edit]

From older gnauða, from Old Norse gnauða, derived from the feminine noun gnauð (noise). The modern Icelandic neuter noun gnauð, nauð, on the other hand, is derived from the verb.

nauða (weak verb, third-person singular past indicative nauðaði, supine nauðað)

  1. (of the wind) to howl
  2. (of animals) to make vocal noises, bark, low (not very loudly)
  3. to nag, whine (with preposition á or í + the person the nagging is directed at)
