From Old English ūtniman (to take out). Cognate with Saterland Frisian uutnieme (to exclude, exempt), West Frisian útnimme, Dutch uitnemen (to take out), German Low German utnehmen (to take out), German ausnehmen (to exclude, exempt, except).
