platform loop (plural platform loops)

  1. (rail transport) A short stretch of railway line at a railway station which leaves a through line to serve a platform, before rejoining the through line beyond the station.
    • 1962 August, G. M. Kichenside, “Resignalling for the Kent Coast electrification—Phase II”, in Modern Railways, page 110:
      Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Paddock Wood, Headcorn and Ashford stations have platform loops and there is a short four-track section between Cheriton and Folkestone Central.
