Etymology
[edit]Unclear. DIL suggests a compound equivalent to rá (“speaking”) + buile (“madness, frenzy”), but the preponderance of mh spellings casts doubt on this hypothesis. A connection with English rave is possible but leaves the -aille unexplained.
