Etymology

[edit]

A term with multiple plausible etymologies. Either from Latin rāpum (turnip), Ancient Greek ῥάπυς (rhápus, turnip), or Proto-Slavic *rěpa (turnip, beet), or natively from Proto-Indo-European *(s)rā́ps. First attested as rrap, producing the contemporary form through plural metaphony[1] and the Arberësh form rrapë. Due to the variant between e and a between standard and archaic, it supports a non-slavic origin.
