Etymology

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Đà might simply mean "river" (cf. Zhuang dah (river), Tày tả (river)). However, it's also mentioned that this is a Tai word meaning "brown", "black" or "dark", but I have been unable to locate any such word (the likes of Thai ดำ has the -m coda which can hardly be borrowed as an open syllable by Vietnamese).”

The Đà element is of Tai origin.
