Welsh[edit]

Etymology[edit]

söoleg (zoology) +‎ -wr

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

söolegwr m (plural söolegwyr, feminine söolegwraig, not mutable)

  1. zoologist[1]
    Synonyms: swolegydd, söolegydd

Usage notes[edit]

Use of the coordinate feminine form is discouraged in modern language.

Geiriadur yr Academi promotes söolegwr and söolegydd as Welsh terms for zoologist, marking “swolegwr etc.” as “less correct”.[1] However, swolegwr and swolegydd are assumed normative by Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru in its glosses on synonyms[2][3][4][5] and swolegydd is the preferred term of Y Termiadur Addysg, sponsored by the Welsh government as a source of standardised terminology for use in Welsh-medium education.[6]
