Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish صرتلان (sırtlan, hyena), which derives from Proto-Turkic *sïrtlan (hyena); equivalent to sırt (coarse back hairs of an animal) + -lan (suffix denoting a wild, predatory animal). For the suffix, compare aslan (lion), yılan (snake), kaplan (tiger).
