Etymology[edit]
From Old Danish saghnæ (“miss”), where the v comes from a consistent change of gh after vowels like a and o. Compare haghi → have. Cognate with Norwegian Bokmål savne (from Danish), Norwegian Nynorsk sakne, Swedish sakna. Derived with the suffix -na from the verb saka (“to harm, blame”).
