Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic свеклъ (sveklŭ), from Byzantine Greek, from Ancient Greek σεῦκλον (seûklon). Compare Serbo-Croatian cvikla, Bulgarian цвекло (cveklo), Russian свёкла (svjókla); cf. also Hungarian cékla.
