Inherited from Proto-Slavic *jьzpodъ, a univerbation of *jьz + *podъ (“under, below, beneath”). Doublet of spod. Less likely continuing Proto-Slavic *podъ (“floor”), from Proto-Indo-European *pṓds (“foot”).
