Etymology

Ultimately from Proto-Balto-Slavic *śwaitas, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱweyt-. In this case, most likely a Slavic borrowing, likely from Old East Slavic свѣтъ (světŭ). Compare Samogitian sviets.
