Etymology[edit]
From Old Swedish systlinger, systlunger (“mother’s niece or nephew”), from syster (“sister”) + -linger. When the word kusin was borrowed from French, the words syssling and brylling underwent a semantic shift from ”cousin” to ”second cousin” and ”third cousin”, respectively.
