Borrowed from French chiffre (“digit, figure, cipher”), Medieval Latin cifra (“numeral, cipher, zero”), Arabic صِفْر (ṣifr, “zero, empty, nothing”) . Doublet of cyfra (“digit”) and zero (“zero”).
