[edit]Probably from German Stieglitz, from Middle High German stigliz, stigeliz, stiglitze, stigelitze, from Old Czech stehlec (now Czech stehlík, Slovak stehlík), from Proto-Slavic *ščigъlъ, *ščegъlъ, a Late Common Slavic onomatopoeia.
