truncated cube (plural truncated cubes)

  1. (geometry) A polyhedron with eight triangular and six octagonal faces that is an Archimedean solid and can be constructed by truncating a cube at each vertex along each adjoining edge.
    • 2003, Saul Stahl, Geometry from Euclid to Knots, published 2010, page 278:
The truncation procedure that produced the truncated cube I can be applied to arbitrary polyhedra so as to obtain new polyhedra.

The truncated cubes are obtained by symmetrically edging the eight vertices of the cube by l × t, where l is the length of the cubes side and 0 < t ≤ 1/2. When t = 1/2, a cuboctahedron is obtained.

In this subsection the optical behavior of different truncated cubes will be analyzed and compared to those of a cube and of a sphere of the same dimensions.

Truncated cubes can be packed sharing their octagonal faces, the remaining voids are filled by octahedra (Figure 10(b)).
