From Proto-Balto-Slavic *waiˀníkas, from Proto-Indo-European *woyh₁níkos.

Cognate to Polish wianek (garland) and wieniec (wreath).[1] See also výti (to wind), výtulas and vytùvai (device to wind a thread).
