Middle English[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Old English wēofod (altar). From wēoh (idol, image) +‎ bed (bed), from Proto-Germanic *wīhą (sacred place or thing) and *badją (plot, bed).

Alternatively, the second component could be Old English bēod (offering stage, dish), from Proto-Germanic *beudaz (offering stage).
