Etymology

From Proto-Hmong-Mien *-ʔræi (vegetable); cognate with Iu Mien lai and perhaps Middle Chinese (MC xjw+jX|xjw+jH, “herbs, vegetation”).[1] Likely unrelated to Vietnamese rau (leafy greens, leaf vegetable), despite superficial similarities.
