Etymology[edit]

From Þórðar (of Þórður) the genitive of Þórður (Þórður, an Icelandic male given name) and gleði (joy, happiness), literally meaning the "joy of Þórður" or the "happiness of Þórður". It was coined by a reverend by the name of Árni when his labourer Þórður rejoiced in the raining on their neighbor Þórður of Rauðkollsstaðir's dry hay.

Although the word Þórðar is a proper name and is capitalized the compound word þórðargleði is not.[1]

Noun[edit]

þórðargleði f (genitive singular þórðargleði, no plural)

  1. schadenfreude
