Etymology[edit]

From Scythian *Spalarīźa (commander of army), composed of *spala (army) (cf. Old Persian 𐎿𐎱𐎠𐎭 (spāda, army), Parthian 𐭏𐭎𐭐𐭀𐭃 (ispāδ, army)) + *rīźa (desiring, commanding) (cf. Khotanese rriś (to desire), Sogdian 𐽀𐼷𐼵𐼸𐽀𐼰𐼸 (rēš-karē)).[1]

Cognate with Gandhari 𐨭𐨿𐨤𐨫𐨁𐨪𐨁𐨭 (śpaliriśa).
